Willis B. Barnes, 78, of Erie, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025. Born in Collins, Mississippi, Willis later settled in Erie, where he became a respected entrepreneur, minister, and dedicated family man.
A graduate of Academy High School, he earned his mechanical license in Detroit, Michigan, where he began his journey in the automotive industry. He went on to build a legacy of more than 50 years, founding Will’s Transmission Service – Home of the Doctor, along with other successful businesses in Erie and Atlanta.
In Erie, his auto repair shops became staples of the community, with locations at:
• The 1800 block of Parade Street
• The 400 block of East 17th and 18th Streets
• The 800 block of West 16th Street
In addition to transmission repair, he operated towing services in both Erie and Atlanta and introduced one of Erie’s first limousine services, which featured vintage Rolls Royce vehicles. A true trailblazer, Willis mentored countless young mechanics and entrepreneurs, opening doors for others and inspiring success through his example.
In the early 2000s, Willis was ordained as a minister and faithfully served as a member of Christian Ministries of the Apostolic Faith Church under the leadership of Bishop Quinn. He was a man of strong faith whose life reflected dedication to God and service to others.
He was the proud father of ten children:
Soyna Richardson, Michelle Barnes, Willis D. Evans, Trinita M. Evans-Robinson, Estus B. Barnes, Cheryl Barnes, Shirea Mitchell, LaSheena Barnes, Seth Barnes, and the late Talia S. Barnes.
He is also survived by a loving legacy of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his devoted sisters:
Shirley Barnes, Barbara Hairston, and Dorothy Dunston.
Willis was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Eb Barnes and Rita Barnes, and his daughter Talia S. Barnes.
