Cherylene (Char) Tate, a resident of Erie, PA, was born July 16, 1957, and passed on January 15, 2026. Cherylene was preceded in death by her parents, Roberta (Robinson) Tate and Esset Tate, Sr., her sister Annette and brother James Tate.
Char is survived by four sisters: Retha Tate, Barbara (Sherman) Roberts, Shirley (Jimmy Keys) McCray, and Sharann Tate; and three brothers: Willie (Rhea) Tate, Sr., Leroy Tate, and Esset Tate, Jr. Additional surviving family members include sisters Laris (Thurman) Boatman-Wells of Chicago, IL, and Doris (Eddie) Cockell-Hinton of Houston, TX., and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts and an uncle.
Char accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal savior at an early age and later joined House of Prayer Missionary Baptist Church in Erie, PA.
Char attended J. H. Thompson Academies Career Training School, where she earned an Associate of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene. Char was previously employed in the Dental Department at the Booker T. Washington Center; the admission and discharge department at Hamot Hospital; and the JFK Center Senior Citizens Program. She also worked part-time at the R. Benjamin Wiley Community Charter School in its Senior Citizens Program, mentoring students.
Char was a free-spirited person who lived life on her terms but was always there to offer a helping hand to anyone in need. Her mission in church became the focus of her service to God: To be a good steward, a committed Usher, and beautify the front lawn of the church by planting flowers, for which she had so much pride.
Char will be missed, along with her honest words. The family love for her will endure.
